Baby Names

Hey ya'll it is that time again, we are thinking about baby names!  So what are your opinions?  Take a vote!  But please be aware, we will likely ignore whatever you say and go with our gut (if it ever speaks up), so don't be offended if that happens.

I am more at a loss, this is our 3rd time going over girl names and at this point I don't have any super strong feelings pointing the way, but I do have 3 that I am strongly considering.  Oh, and since I actually like all these names, please limit your comments to positive ones and none of the "Well, I absolutely HATE 'this one'".  Anyway, I would LOVE to hear some input, and even if you have suggestions that aren't currently on our list, we are open to them!  Here they are!

JANE
(I am a HUGE Jane Austen fan and this classic name makes me think of the beautiful Jane Bennet)

KATHRYN
(after my mom whose name is Kathy, we would probably call her Kate, maybe Kitty as a little girl)

ELLE
(and call her Ellie as a little girl)

Anyway, as you can tell we like more simple classic names, our other girls are Lily and Isabel, and we'd like to stay in that classic category.  So...what do you think?

UUUGGGGHHH, why must we be the same and like the same things all the time? No kidding, these are all names on my list (ya know, the list that doesn't really matter at this point since I'm not having kids anytime soon). I guess it just goes to show we both have great taste.

For your sweet little one, I like Kathryn best, because it holds familial significance. Love the spelling, too. :)

I love Elle!!! And its funny...when Kyle and I were going through the names book...we came across Austen(like Jane Austen) and I loved it...but he wasnt a big fan...but we are keeping our name choice a secret...I have had enough of peoples opinions on what we thought of. We picked one out and they will have to deal;) I like all your choices though...very nice...good luck;)

LOVE ELLE! Love love love! There's a little friend of Cecily's who is an Ella but I love all variations of the name.
I know you said keep it positive and I wouldn't say my next comment is negative but just a little inside to my crazy head... Since I am KATIE, not Kathrine I don't like that I share my name with all the "nick-namers" out there. My sister in law is Kathrine but has gone by Katie her whole life and I hate that I have to be Katie A and her Katie Mae. Why can't they just call me Katie and her Kathrine?! You see, I probably shouldn't have let you in my head. ;) But I do love Kate, especially when Chris calls me it. I love my name. PLUS I think it would be so sweet to name your baby after your awesome momma.

Super excited for you! I hope your ickiness goes away soon. It's so hard being pregnant with kids at home. I totally feel your pain.

I love the name Elle, and it totally goes with St.George, but not so much with Earl (my humble opinion, of course). Elle Earl. I dunno. On one hand it's totally cute. On the other hand, it's a little tricky from a phonetic point of view. Then again, it might just be my linguistics training: something that normal people wouldn't even notice. Why do I have to be such a linguistic genius?! It's tough!

Jane Earl is cute and classic, but it reminds me too much of Jayne Eyre, which I hate. So there's that. And clearly, that's what matters most.

Kathryn Earl is delightful, and therefore, wins my vote. And the family significance also wins me over. I just think of mom reciting that line from "The Taming of the Shrew"...

--Good morrow, Kate. For that is your name I hear.

--Well have you heard, but something hard of hearing. They do call me Katherine that do speak of me.

LOVE Jane, it's def on my list. And no joke, I just walked in the door from playing at the park with a little girl named Kate. She was way cute. But Jane tops my list :)

hehehe I like Jane, and Kathry - LOVE the name Kate. Sigh. LOVE. So that is my pick. Kate. so fun!! I can't wait to meet her!!!

I am sure your Mom would love it too! ;-)

I love, love, love all three names! You really can't go wrong:)

I like straightforward names where you call the child by their first name, and it's spelled that way people can understand its pronunciation. I bet most people will mispronounce Elle as El, like from Legally Blonde. If you like the name, spell it Ellie for clarity.

I think you're crazy for opening this up for debate though. I got enough unsolicited opinions to last a lifetime. :-)

Since you are into classic names I would go with Jane. It's a popular name again and all the Jane's I know are beautiful. It's a pretty name.

I prefer Katherine for obvious reasons :)

and no I will never understand why my parents put Katherine on my birth certificate but yet never once called me that!

I agree with Heather--Jane was especially one that was on our list. But, since we're not looking like we'll be producing any girls anytime soon, you can have it. :)

I actually really do love Kathryn best, too--especially because it's spelled with a "K" ("Kathryn with a 'C' always looks so smug"--can you tell me where the quote comes from? Can ya?). That's always been one of my favorites, and Kathryn Earl is just beautiful.

Have fun!!

Kathryn gets my vote. I love names that can be more "serious" as an adult but have a cute nickname as a kid. I love Kate, Katie or any other version. I especially like the family throw back to your mom. What a great namesake! I'm totally on board with Charlie and his linguistics issues. BUT, anyone who knows my struggles with naming a 3rd boy already knows this. Good luck!

Jane. It sounds like you already have such a special, significant connection with it. Second choice = Elle.

I vote for Kathryn, with that spelling. It's classy and classic. I think Jane and Elle (spelled any which way) are being overused right now. Jane Earl is too plain Jane, and the spelling of Elle is too unusual. You could call her Kat!

I think you should go with Brucella Louise. It has a history in the family, too.

Ok, so I came back to read comments to see what other people thought, and now I've got a question. Would Elle be pronounced like the letter "L", or like "Ellie"? This whole time I thought it was like the letter, but then I read someone's comment saying they thought people would be confused and mispronounce it. Was I wrong, or were they?

Jenn said...

Heather, you are right. Her name would be "L", that is the way it is phonetically spelled, Elle and that is how it would be pronounced. I said that when she was little we would likely call her Ellie, just like I am Jennifer, but for a long time I was (and to some people I still am) Jenny.

None of the names we are thinking of have been in the top 100 most popular names for the past 2 years, but "Ella" is in the top 10 2 years running so I am thinking we probably won't go with Elle anyway, though I haven't completely ruled it out. I also agree with Charlie that "Elle Earl" might be hard for a little girl to say. Though it is Lily's favorite, so we'll see.

Kellee said...

HEY! I am bias toward "Elle"- and clearly think that it is the best as it is at the heart of "Kellee." ha ha! Truly, I think that they are all beautiful names that will match a beautiful lil face! (which we all know we can count on:) I LOVE YOU AND AM SOOO HAPPY FOR YOU!! We will have to teach your cuties to sing harmonies, and they will be the talk of the town... "The Earl sisters!"

Of the three, I think I like Jane the best. How about Jane Kathryn Earl? I'd like to add some suggestions since you said you'd take those too. I thought of two I really love that I think would go well with your other girls names and they are Eliza and Tessa. Or how about Sabrina? I don't care if our kids have the same name and it's truly my favorite girl name of all time. I think it's beautiful.

All three names are fabulous. You really are good at naming kids. You should have lots of them so you can use all of your beautiful names. Heehee.

I love the name Elle and I REALLY love Ellie (we considered that name for Emmary), but I agree with Charlie that Elle Earl doesn't sound as good as the other two names. Try saying it 10 times fast. But, if you are set on Elle remember that she will probably have a different last name eventually.

Kathryn is my favorite. Not only is it a beautiful name, but you would be naming her after one of my favorite people in the whole world, and someone worth looking up to. I also really like all the nicknames associated with Kathryn (Kate, Katie, Kat, Kitty, etc.)

Wow! I had no idea you were considering Kathryn with me in mind! I'm very touched. But then, you know I'm also very "touched" (in the head, ya know), so what can I say? And yes, Charlie, I'd love to have somebody in the next generation for whom my morning greeting would be accurate!

While I like the name Elle by itself, I have to agree with those who say Elle Earl sounds too tang-tonguely.

I know you may name her Elle, but until you decide, I'm going to think of her as Katie Jane Earl. That way I have a two out of three chance of being right. :)

I love the name Elle! And Ellie when she's little! So cute. I wanted that name, but my husband just wouldn't go for it, so we went for the next closest thing-Allie. Jane is going to be our next daughters middle name, so I like that as a second favorite. We're naming our next girl London Jane so you can steal that if you like it too.
